It is the third largest building complex in the world. The architect Norman Foster described it as “the mother of all airports”. During the Berlin Blockade of 1948 – 1949 it was a lifesaver for millions of West Berliners. Between February and October of 2008, Judith Stenneken documented the airport before its closing on 30 October 2008, showing the transitory condition of a place which had already been abandoned for some time and whose future, even now, is still uncertain.
