“Old World Succulence” ist eine Sammlung von Fotografien von Pflanzen und Tieren in den Zoos, botanischen Gärten und Aquarien Berlins. Durch den Einsatz eines harten, „kalten“ Blitzes entsteht eine radikal dissonante Welt – futuristisch und dystopisch, prähistorisch und zeitlos zugleich. Werden diese Lebewesen gefangen gehalten? Zu Studienzwecken? Oder sind sie die letzten Überreste eines zerstörten Planeten? Diese Fotos muten an wie die Arbeit von naturwissenschaftlichen Illustratoren, die vor der Erfindung der Fotografie die natürliche Welt dokumentiert haben. Aber auch wie ihre modernen Äquivalente – Röntgenbilder und Mikroskopie – oder fotografische Negative. Sie konfrontieren den Betrachter mit der Schönheit und Tragik ihrer eigenen Beziehung mit der Natur.
„Old World Succulence“ is a collection of photographs of living plants and animals in Berlin zoos and botanical gardens. Through the use of a blinding, intrusive flash comes a radically dissonant world – futuristic and dystopian, while also prehistoric and timeless. Are these specimens being held captive? For study? Are they the last vestiges of a ruined planet? These photos reference the work of natural science illustrators who, before photography, documented the natural world, and modern equivalents – x-rays and microscopy – as well as the photographic negative itself. They confront the viewer with the beauty and tragedy of their own relationship with nature.
